Congratulations to Anh Quach, Drexel's 2022 recipient of a DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) award!
Anh Quach
BS Biological Sciences '23, Honors
Faculty Mentors: Dr. Joris Beld, Dr. Amy Ma, Dr. Susan Gurney, and Dr. Svetlana Khakhina
Anh Quach is a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Food Science. As an international student from a non-STEM background, she was first introduced to research during her freshman year via the SEA-PHAGES program, where she investigated the efficacy of bacteriophages versus antibiotics in eradicating bacteria. Her subsequent work in the STAR Program and her co-ops further solidified her passion for microbiological research, particularly microbial ecology and antibiotic resistance. She currently works as a research assistant at Drexel University College of Medicine to study vitamin B12 metabolism in bacteria from environmental samples. Through the DAAD RISE program, she hopes to explore the structures and roles of bacterial efflux pumps in multidrug resistance. She aspires to become a microbiologist to further investigate the mechanisms behind antibiotic resistance to help combat the antibiotic resistance crisis.
DAAD RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from North America, Great Britain, and Ireland in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer.
